OFFICER RECORDS

Stowers, Adam R.

Overview

In the Ben Schneider (Reckless Ben) case, Adamson’s recorded communications identify Sgt. Adam R. Stowers as receiving updates about the March 11 operation and plans for detainees at AFPD.

Stowers’ wife, Jamie L. Stowers, works as a records specialist for the American Fork Police Department.

Other names used: Adam Stowers.

Employment

Police Sergeant Adam R. Stowers began working for the American Fork Police Department on August 3, 2009.

Sergeant Stowers is married to Jamie L. Stowers, who is employed by the American Fork Police Department as a records specialist. She served as Benjamin Schneider’s contact for records requests and handled redactions of body-camera footage released in connection with his case.

Their employment does not appear to violate the department’s nepotism policy because neither spouse is within the other’s direct chain of command. However, Adam Stowers’s leadership position within the department makes the relationship relevant when Jamie Stowers handles records concerning allegations against the department. This is not an allegation that either Adam or Jamie Stowers engaged in misconduct, but it raises a legitimate question about potential conflicts of interest and whether sensitive releases should receive independent review. See Policy 1025 of the American Fork Police Department Policy Manual.
